President-elect Donald J. Trump has just selected two new cabinet members for health and transportation. Representative Tom Price of Georgia for health and human services.
Price, an orthopedic surgeon and opponent of the Affordable Care Act, plans to dismantle President Obama’s health care law, a program that has helped many Americans, especially elders and minorities obtain affordable health care plans.
So what will this mean for Americans and their health for the next four years? Price has proposed an alternative to the Affordable Care Act, a bill called the Empowering Patients First Act.
The bill would offer incentives for people to contribute to health savings accounts; offer grants to states to subsidize insurance for “high-risk populations”; allow insurers licensed in one state to sell policies to residents of others; and authorize business and professional groups to provide coverage to members through “association health plans.”
The bill would also make it easier for doctors to defend themselves against medical malpractice lawsuits and enter into private contracts with Medicare beneficiaries, this would ultimately allow doctors to opt out of Medicare and charge higher rates normally allowed within program guidelines.
Many critics have already blasted Mr. Price health care proposal including the president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Cecile Richards who says Price’s health care proposal creates a “grave threat to women’s health.”
“If he had his way, millions of women could be cut off from Planned Parenthood’s preventative health services,” Richards said.
This could also mean that many women could lose access to free birth control under the Affordable Care Act and could be charged more than men for the same health insurance.
